Sisters is a hybrid film which, in three chapters, offers a nuanced and multidimensional exploration on the themes of womanhood, fate and sacrifice

The first chapter tells the story of Hannah, a young Scottish woman who, despite her seemingly normal  life, decides to leave all she knows behind and embark on a life-defining journey to embrace her destiny: to join the Daesh and become a Jihadi bride in Syria.

Hannah’s story is then followed by a very stylized adaptation of a scene from Nobel-winning autor José Saramago’s play In Nomine Dei. In it, two women from the 1500’s debate whether one should sacrifice one’s life in name of religion or not, a parable whose implications are central to contemporary life.

Finally, a series of interviews with young women offers a clear insight on the challenges and barriers young women face nowadays and on how the explanation for the phenomenon of the radicalization of young women may be more elusive than most people think.

Press:

«There’s more experimental moving image in the Film department, where Filipe Caeiro sets the question of what might make a young woman join the Islamic State. Disagreeing with the suggestion that he's made a straightforward activist film, he clearly states: “The agenda is there’s no agenda.”»
